My son has decided to remove the LS6 454 from his 1979 Berlinetta. We are going to replace the original piston rings, valve springs, camshaft, lifters and intale manifold. The rings may be loosing tension under hard load and causing the oil leak problem he gets when running down the 1/4 mile track. I will post progress of the tear down.

The engine is out now and tore down to the short block. I will remove the rods and pistons soon when I get some time.Darn cylinder heads must weigh 80lbs each!

What kind of breather system are you guys running on that thing Greg?? Do you think a better system would releive crankcase pressure at high rpm under load like that and prevent it from leaking??

We 1st had the stock pcv system. Then we went to a Moroso crankcase evacuating system that connects in the headers like a dragster uses. That did not seem to help either. Many people have told me it is possible for the original piston rings to loose their tension under load. I think we will get some real good rings for the rebuild.

They definitley will. If they are the factory rings still in there that is not a huge surprise that it does that.

Well , we did not get the short block torn down this weekend. I was too busy with other side jobs. My son was out of town too. Maybe during the week we will tear it down. Next weekend I have to install a 600 square foot floor at my mom's house and if I have time maybe the SS will come out of hibernation.

That one is done. Got another one finished today. Dropped a 350 in a friend's 83 that I put a cam/lifters/springs/intake/carb/headers on. Got finished up the little stuff this weekend and put in lowering springs, shocks and struts. Had it out for a little road test earlier. Yeeeha!!
